I recognize that most of you are on my site because you are marathoners at heart (me too!). So how do you feel about 5k training? Is it a necessary evil? Have you just avoided it? Do you like that “get down” speed feeling?

So excited to start week 1 of 12 today with a 3 race 5 K series on the horizon. Rust buster park run 2 days ago to get my baseline. Now its time to work and enjoy the ride. Thanks for encouraging us to segment out the year and thanks for having an amazing team. I love working with @CoachMelissa !

I really like doing 5k training because it’s nice to do some faster and shorter stuff. I think it’s also nice to have the variability mixed into the year with different cycles happening that don’t feel redundant. So I’m all in for 5k training!

I have trained in Texas summer heat for Marathons and after finally getting that sub 3, I am ready to spice it up and do some faster paces with less training loads. I believe that sets me up for a great marathon cycle in the near future!! It makes us better in other race distances.

I raced a 5K at the beginning of the year and all I can say is, that was intense! Ha ha

It’s definitely nicer to do the speed during the summer. Run Clubbers- make sure you join the summer training webinar. Can find it under the events (prob easier on pc)

I like doing speed work instead of marathon training with lower mileage during the summer. I live north of Atlanta and the hot and humid weather is here so marathon training that I did in the late fall and early winter is not possible due to weather. I am on a 10k plan right now and while not 5k, I feel like I must have lost endurance at faster speeds at some point. I don’t know if it was due to the wet and cold conditions of a late February marathon that contributed or other factors, but I feel speed work is rebuilding leg speed. My experience is that it is necessary. I have decided that if I am not training for a particular marathon, I will race some 5ks to help retain speed.
