I like doing speed work instead of marathon training with lower mileage during the summer. I live north of Atlanta and the hot and humid weather is here so marathon training that I did in the late fall and early winter is not possible due to weather. I am on a 10k plan right now and while not 5k, I feel like I must have lost endurance at faster speeds at some point. I don’t know if it was due to the wet and cold conditions of a late February marathon that contributed or other factors, but I feel speed work is rebuilding leg speed. My experience is that it is necessary. I have decided that if I am not training for a particular marathon, I will race some 5ks to help retain speed.
