Hi so I just purchased the Classic Beginner plan (18 weeks) and I was wondering the strategy I should use to picking the goal pace for my race. My overall goal is to run a sub 2 HR HM.

Some background: I have finished a handful of HM marathons (just did one on Sunday), usually using plans I guess would be considered more “Just Finish” because of lack of SOS type of workouts. I have run a best of 2:04 but that was couple of years ago (and 15 less lbs) and I pretty much had to drag myself across finish line (went out a bit fast) I just ran a 2:14 on Sunday of which I wasn’t trying for a particular time, just wanted a solid steady performance after I had a DNF in July.

I foolishly tried one of the previous 12 week plans, for which I was probably “over my skis” for fit level purposes in regard to the pace I had plugged in (Sub 2:00), mostly for SOS paces. Distance hasn’t been the issue

Overall, I am finally at a point schedule wise where I can do the 18 week plan, and I feel Im ready to tackle and follow plan as much as I can. Im tackling my nutrition, etc to keep me on point with the plan. So I guess the big question is, do I try to shoot for my goal of sub 2HR? Should I take baby steps and maybe just go for 2:05, then eventually strive for the sub 2 HR? Sorry for the long winded question/explanation! Thanks!

Even though you have done a few it doesn’t sound like you have done a lot of structured training- that’s good here. It means your ceiling is pretty high. I don’t think getting to 2:00:00 is a huge stretch at this level but I get that it’s intimidating to look at. Maybe start the plan off with a time somewhere in the middle. After about 6 weeks, reassess and see about knocking the time down a little more. It doesn’t have to be an immediate jump.

Thanks @Luke, I like that take on it. I definitely plan to reassess after a while to see where Im at.
