Long Runs Are a Slog
Hey there, community. I’m nearing the end of the Advanced Marathon plan and I have a race on Sept 19, 2021. Everything is going well except for the long runs. I’m doing workouts aimed at a 3hr marathon time and the Tue/Thurs Strength and Tempo runs are actually great. I’m killing it. In fact, I almost find Tuesdays workouts too easy, but I stick to the pace charts for fear I’ll get injured or not really do myself much good. The problems come on Sunday.
For whatever reason, running 12-16 miles at the slower pace is REALLY HARD. They start out merely okay-feeling, and the last 1/3rd to 1/4 of the runs are a total slog. I’m eating well, staying hydrated, have no other health issues. I have purchased the 1st and 2nd editions of the book and I don’t see where this problem is mentioned. I’ve run much further than this for long runs in the past. I’ve run as far as a 50-miler on trails (a tale for another day).
Why on earth is it so difficult to complete the Sunday runs at the target pace? And if I wind up with times that are TOO slow, what should I be doing to adjust so that I hit my target times for ALL runs all week long?
Thanks!
