Need a long term plan
Posted by Cannon Lomax on January 27, 2023 at 12:27 pmSo Ive completed the advanced HHM plan multiple times over the last three years. Where can I find some guidance for long term planning? I kinda lost on how to train all year to get better. Should I be doing different plans like 5 k and 10k? Im up to mid 50’s mileage per week and would really like to get up in the high 60’s. Any suggestions?

Yes! If you truly want to improve in your marathon, you’ll get to a point where you have to work on shorter distances in order to improve at the marathon.

What you do is really up to what you really want train for. If looking to further your half times, then yes, improving 5k and 10k times would be the way to go. Your mileage is pretty solid, so I would start with improving those race distances first before moving up or anything in mileage. You can do a lot of damage at 50-60 miles a week!

Thanks for the feedback!
Luke, You mentioned it depends on what I’m wanting. I think that’s another way I’m lost or unsure of what’s possible. I really enjoy running and I enjoy competing so I wanna be faster at all distances. I will take your advice to start training for different race distances at different times of the year.
I would love to get in the high teens for half marathon and sub 18 5k. It’s kind of a pipe dream. My most recent was 1.28.37 at 47 years old. I would think it would require couching to make those kinds of improvements. But is it possible and would it look like long term training at different races distances while adding easy mileage?

Totally agree. If I’m not training for a marathon I’m on a 5k/10k plan or a recovery plan. Ideally, one of each every year
