  • Paces for half marathon plan vs marathon plan

Question, I’ve followed the Hanson’s plan for many marathons in the past and had great success. Coming back from surgery and am tackling a Half before I return to the full, so I bought the Half Marathon method book, but I’ve confused about the pace table, compared to what I had seen for the full.

Let’s say I want to run the half in 1:45, which would be an 8:01 min/mile pace. The pace table for 1:45 shows 8:23 for tempo runs (22 seconds slower than I expected) and the strength pace as 8:13, slower than race pace? Makes me question the rest of the paces in that row as well.

Should I jump down to the row that shows 8:01 as the tempo pace (the row for 1:41 Half Goal) and use those paces for my workouts?

I don’t have a copy in front of me, can you give me a table number for reference?

That’s just a general pace table. Each section will have specific pace tables.

I’m super late to the party here (sorry) and hopefully you have your answer by now. But, just in case:

I had the same question. Short answer: I just use the pace calculator here on the app (bottom right button, HMM pace calculator) and follow the half marathon paces prescribed there.

Long answer: that table shows tempo pace for a full marathon, which will be slower than half marathon tempo pace, which will NOT bring you to finish sub 1:45. 8:01/mile is the correct tempo pace if you’re training for a 1:45 half.

Hope this help and sorry for the delay
