If I use a recent 5K race time for determining an equivalent race performance for the 10K via the calculator, can I then take that equivalent 10K time, calculate improvements such as 2%-4% and use that as the race goal for my next training plan? What would be the reasons not to?

You can, but I would be careful

    1) The shorter the race distance and the faster the paces, the smaller percentage you can probably improve at one point. 1-3% might be more appropriate at the level.

    2) If that new 10k time seems aggressive, I’d treat how we talk about with marathon training and use current pace and work down to that goal pace.
